Local Goods: Can we talk for a second about DF Mavens Vegan Ice Cream?

Holy shit, yes we can.

I think my favorite part of DF Mavens Vegan Ice Cream is probably the sorcery involved with making it. Sure, the base ingredient is always either coconut milk or soy milk. And yes, the other ingredients include things like roasted pecans, vegan caramel swirls, pieces of cookie crusts, hazelnuts and hazelnut liqueur, fudge sauce and brandy. But the cornerstone of DF Mavens’ success is definitely its deal with the vegan ice cream devil. It has to be.

Our magical love affair started I went to mini organic grocery on my street (not the one across the street or the one 2 blocks away) with one of my roommates to pick something not-vegan-ice-cream up. As I passed the ice cream cooler, I couldn’t help but notice the most adorable teeny one-serving cartons of “DF Mavens Dairy-Free Frozen Dessert.” My roommate only slightly mocked my giddiness at this discovery. (He knows I’m serious about ice cream. He’s also probably picked up on my penchant for single serving anything-adorables.) I let it go that night but returned the next day for a Madagascar Vanilla Bean.

I just…I just love this ice cream. I’m a big fan of ice cream in general and connoisseur of all kinds, whether it involves milk or no milk or kefir or whatever. I love it all. And with this little 4oz carton, DF Mavens quietly snuck into my top position. It’s so creamy, rich, amazing, delicious, and perfect. It’s like normal ice cream but about 1000x better. Hence, the black magic that must be involved.

Since that fateful day I’ve tried the Key Lime Creme, Del Lago Chocolate, and my new main squeeze, New Orleans Salted Praline. Each one is a goddamn miracle on ice.

The Key Lime Creme has little pieces of cookie thrown in the mix, a tart and pronounced real key lime flavor and insanely perfect. So often things with lemon or lime flavors taste like floor wax but there’s nothing artificial tasting here.

The Del Lago Chocolate is rich and delicious but it’s also just chocolate ice cream. Keep in mind, however, that “just chocolate ice cream” is not something many dairy-free ice cream brands manage to pull off even remotely successfully.

But New Orleans Salted Praline. I’m having a hard time not going through pints like they are pint tissues and I have a pint sneezing problem. There is nothing “good for dairy-free ice cream” about this stuff. It is legitimately some of the best ice cream I have ever had. And remember, I have ice cream running through my veins. It’s very cold inside my body. I am an ice queen.

Now the organic grocery two blocks away (and right off the subway) also carries a full array of DF Mavens flavors. Hopefully it’ll be in even more stores across the country soon so everyone ever can also eat their weight in vegan ice cream. Because I don’t want to be alone in this. Even though that is the preferred way to eat ice cream. Alone. In tears. Of happiness.

  1. I wanted to try this product since I am gluten free. The label reads that it is made on the same equipment as wheat, hence it is no longer gluten free. Just wanted to warn anyone that is Celiac or intolerant.
